(work in progress)
A musical instrument designed to be played together with and powered by simple microbial fuel cells. Very-low-power electronics give voice to the rising and falling power levels of small arrangements of cells. The mud organist (and keen listener) is invited to tune into the curious characteristics of these living power sources, exploring their response to changing loads, sensitivity to their environment. Mud Organ(isms) offers a gentle and playful introduction to microbial fuel cells.
The instrument and process is open source: http://taat.live/agora/mudorgan
Presented at the MudTronics 2026 Award Day at Empower Saclay, and won the MudTronics Microbial Fuel Cell World Championship 2026 Creativity Award (runner up in categories Art and Accessibility).
